Pearl Jam kwam dankzij oplettende fans tot de ontdekking dat AT&T een bepaalde passage van haar live concert in de webcast verwijderd had. Het betrof een fragment waarin de band een liedje zong dat commentaar op president Bush bevatte. Hoewel AT&T zegt dat dit gewoon een foutje was, ziet de band dit anders: “What happened to us this weekend was a wake up call, and it’s about something much bigger than the censorship of a rock band.” It’s about protecting free speech and a free Internet.
Pleitbezorgers van net neutrality regels delen de zienswijze van Pearl Jam: “The admitted censoring of a Pearl Jam performance is just one more reason why content should be protected against the actions of a company looking out for itself, rather than for consumers and the free flow of information over the Internet,” zei Gigi Sohn, president of Public Knowledge.
