Who knows that as of 2018 every new car in The European Union should have a microphone, that can be switched on from a distance? Mid August I asked two computer science professors. They did not know. End of August I asked 70 Internet law students. No one knew. Besides the microphone there is also a device that monitors your position, and in case of an accident automatically calls the emergency number 112. Only occasionally you come across someone who knows about this EU initiative based on Regulation 2015/758 concerning type-approval requirements for the deployment of the eCall in-vehicle system based on the 112 service.
On 29 April 2015 the Regulation 2015/758 was adopted. The objective of this regulation is to increase road safety through the deployment of the so-called eCall in-vehicle system (eCall). eCall is part of the bigger framework on Intelligent Transport Systems. Some companies expect benefits due to the mandatory deployment of this system, that also can serve as a platform to provide commercial services.
